Did you know that it’s not just great talent that makes a singer a ‘great’ singer? We all know that there is a certain about of natural talent or innate ability involved, but if they were to leave it at just that, then they would not have become the great singer that they are. I only know of one ‘great’ singer to have claimed that she never took any singing lessons, and that is Dolly Parton. You have to admit, she has fantastic control of her voice, a fabulous range and most importantly, a completely unique sound.
All singers will tell you how important, nay vital (!) it is to get singing lessons and to practice, practice, practice!
That may seem overwhelming to you, but I hope that you’ll see from this, that these professionals acknowledge that it is not only talent that got them where they are today. That means that if you apply the same steps as they did, you too can be a professional.
So here’s your first step: GET LESSONS! Even if you can sing well, and other people tell you that you can sing well, don’t limit yourself to just what you can do now. If you want to achieve more, you need to expand yourself more. When you’re first starting out, singing lessons can seem like an expense that you just can’t afford. But really, you can’t afford not to have them. You can’t grow without them. I was singing in my church for 10 years before I finally went and got my first lesson. What I learnt in that first lesson taught me how to sing more powerfully and with greater range… on the first lesson!
If having one-on-one singing lessons is out of your price range at the moment, I highly recommend getting yourself vocal lessons on line. I would even go so far as to say that an online course should be your first stop. You will learn so much starting right at the basics, how to breathe, warm up exercises, chest and head voice, confidence! And so much more.
