Best known from the Carpenter’s recording of the song, Joe Raposo’s composition “Sing” is about as close to perfection as you can get; and carries a useful message. Science has now caught up with Mr. Raposo; studies show that singing makes you more relaxed and improves mood.
So why sing? And why sing out loud? There is no one right answer to this question. However, it seems almost everyone does have an answer to it.
Sing Out Loud, Sing Out Strong
Singing loudly requires you to take deep breaths, exercising your lungs and increasing their capacity. This in turn helps you to breathe better. For people who for one reason or another cannot take vigorous exercise, singing is a great thing.
Sing of good things, not bad
Singing lowers your stress level. Studies which have been done on the phenomena of “Road Rage” show that those who sing in their cars have a much lower incidence of road rage than do those who do not sing in their cars. A music director tells us: “You can’t sing and hate at the same time”.
Sing of happy, not sad
Singing is more cathartic than is speaking. Singing is a good way to work through negative emotions; being able to express oneself in this way (for instance, the blues) goes a long way towards alleviating depression, sorrow and frustration.
Make it simple to last your whole life long
Children who are taught with singing incorporated in to their lessons learn more quickly compared to those who are not taught in this way. The elderly who sing on a regular basis are less likely to exhibit symptoms of senility. The more you make singing a habit, the more benefits there are for you.
Don’t worry if it’s not good enough for anyone else to hear
We’re not all gifted with a beautiful singing voice. However, singing provides a benefit regardless of what your voice is like and what you may choose to sing. Singing provides calm and sharpens the mind, no matter what the tune (even if you can’t carry one yourself).
Just sing – sing a song
Mostly, people sing because it feels good to sing. They can express their emotions instead of bottling them up and reduce stress. You may want to try this yourself. You can have a much healthier, happier life if you just start belting out a tune next time the mood strikes and sing – sing a song!

There are many people out there who just love to sing or imagine themselves with a great singing career. However, there may be a few things lacking from their technique or ability that will set them back from others in the music industry. While there are many different things that can help a singing voice to become better, following some singing tips will greatly improve the chance of making it big. Even for those who sing only for small groups or in a church choir, the tips that are given by others in the music industry can certainly improve just about any voice.
As any vocal coach will say, singing should be a relaxing hobby, so there is no need to be tense. Those singers who are much more relaxed with their mouths and tongues will have a much better sound than those who keep their mouths more closed than open or have their tension in their tongues. These two singing tips alone can greatly improve a singing voice as this is where the majority of the problems come into play. Many singers find it useful to sing while looking in a mirror so they can determine if their mouth needs to open further or their tongue is too tense.
Understanding the correct way to breathe while singing is also important to have a great singing voice. Many people tend to take in too much air or don’t breathe deeply enough to maintain a note for any length of time. It is important to allow breath to come naturally as it does in everyday life. Some other great singing tips include believing what is being sung and having the energy to sing the song. Since it often take a lot of physical energy to actually produce the notes to sing any song, a singer must be energized in order to hit higher notes and keep the note held for any length of time.
Following as many of these tips is essential for any singer to do a much better job. It really doesn’t matter if someone is singing in church or on stage in Nashville, they must understand that these tips will allow them to be the best singer they can be. The hard work involved in perfecting a singing voice will pay off when singing in public the next time.

Rock stars, the younger generations heroes. The Beatles were the ultimate icon of those who go for Rock and Roll music. Until now, the new generation still knows of their songs, listen to their music and still follow the two living member’s lives. It was in the 60’s; then, 70’s, 80’s and until now, rock music is everywhere. Well, not everyone can appreciate these screaming and shouting that comes with the music.
I can still remember my Mom, shouting outside my room every time I play my favorite rock songs very loud. I was in high school. Oh, how glad she maybe felt when I’d gone to college, have finally gotten rid of her daughter and the house was quiet after years of ‘badly behaved’ kid!
But they didn’t know how difficult this kind of singing is! I was in a band in my high school days. I’m telling you, though it may sound noisy to some, but some would crave for it. And the process of this screaming is way more complicated than it sounds. You can’t just scream and shout, it has music behind it.
When I started in my high school rock band, I have to take lessons from a neighbor who was also once part of a Rock and Roll band. He educated me everything that he knows and I was the enthusiastic student, keen to everything, absorbing everything he taught me that whole summer.
And that is why I also want to share to you what I had learned.
It is very essential to be familiar with the proper techniques in able for you to learn scream singing. It should be properly observed that this type of singing is attained correctly. Scream singing has procedures that are very complicated and intricate because it needs screaming in a proper way. Experiment with your voice; know the highest note that you can belt, but don’t push yourself beyond the limit for it might get harmful for your voice. Do proper vocal warm-ups before singing.
Here are some tips to remember:
1. Because screaming is not an easy thing to do, you have to have lots and lots of patient with yourself. It might take you a couple of weeks before you can master it.
2. Maximize the air you are breathing. Don’t strain yourself but still, don’t deprive yourself of air!
3. Be hydrated while practicing or performing. Drinks lots of water and also avoid carbonated drinks.
4. Listening to death metal music can help you improve your singing. Merely listening to it will give you idea on how it’s done. But if you can go to a live death metal or Rock and Roll concert, do it. A first hand experience in scream singing is very helpful if you really want to learn.
5. Relax yourself, breath sensibly. You should enjoy yourself while singing.
6. Take good care of your voice. After you practice singing using scream singing, don’t drink cold drinks and also, avoid talking too much if you can feel that your voice is strained.

If you’re a person that loves to sing in front of many people, then better singing techniques is very important to empower you to deliver a better singing show. Learning a practicing these vocal techniques will go a long way and lets you sing those karaoke songs that you like. By following these techniques you can develop a stronger voice, with a better voice range. You will also be able to hit notes easily without straining your voice.
By following these vocal techniques that i will give you later, your breath will last longer and you won’t end up having to stop in the middle of a song to take a breath. Below are vocal techniques that help you improve your singing voice.
Exercise
Just like any other athlete, singers too need to warm up their voice before singing to avoid strain. Here are some effective warm up exercises:
Slowly count to four and take a deep breath. Hold it while counting to four again. Then, let your breath out with a hissing sound while you count to eight. Do this exercise a few times.
Take a very deep breath, then sing “ahhhh” until your breath run out. Quietly start your voice and then make it louder and louder as you let your breath out.
Another technique is sironing. This technique lets you warm up your voice range. Start as low as you can, then go up to the highest note that you can, and then finally go back down to your lowest note again.
Sing your voice scales with each vowel sound, do the eight notes up and back again.
Another exercise is by doing some tongue twister as fast as you can to warm up your tongue, your lips, your cheeks, and your mouth.
Breathe With Your Diaphragm
One of the considered most important vocal technique to enable you to sing your karaoke songs like a professional is to breathe with your diaphragm. Diaphragm is the area below your rib cage. You can feel it expand to bring air when you take a deep breathe. I advise you to concentrate keeping your lungs expanded using the entire space provided when your diaphragm is expanded. When you try to breathe out, do not push out the air, instead let is escape with your melodious notes. With practice, you will notice that your voice is stronger and easier to control.
Raising Your Soft Palate
Soft palate is the area at the top of the back of your mouth. You can feel it rise up when you are starting to yawn. When it rises, it will open up your throat. It is important to concentrate on keeping this soft palate raised while you are singing and your voice will sound better.
Keeping Voice Box Low
It is also important how to learn how to keep your larynx or what we call voice box, low. You can feel your voice box in your neck, located right at the front of your throat. Put your hand on it, and practice vocalizing without the larynx rising up. This technique may take a while. When you have accomplished this technique, move on to practicing your karaoke songs while keeping your larynx down.
Relax Your Body
Another vocal technique is trying to relax your body. Release the tension from your body, especially in the upper body.
You’ve just learned professional vocal techniques to help you sing great karaoke songs. Practice those vocal techniques and rest assured that you’ll have a quality voice.

Most people think that singers with good voices are born with them. Yes, although some people have better singing voices than others, most, if not all good singers undergo vocal training to improve their voices.
Most of the singer’s training is done through specific vocal exercises to achieve certain effects such as singing powerfully, getting vibrato into the singing voice or even expanding your vocal range so that singing higher notes is a breeze.
Unfortunately, this article cannot do that as the exercises must be physically demonstrated and manually practised. So instead of learning how to get a good voice, this article will show you how to protect and preserve your singing voice because your voice quality can be destroyed by bad habits that you may not even know you have.
Your voice is produced by a delicate mechanism and when used correctly, it rarely gives you any problem. So take good care of your precious voice and will serve you well for your lifetime.
The first golden rule to having a good voice quality is not to take up smoking and if you are already a smoker, do quit smoking before this nasty habit destroys your singing voice further.
The thousands of irritants and chemicals in cigarettes damage your voice and will certainly shorten your singing career and even your life unless you are a rock singer and need to have a raspy and coarse voice.
Always stay hydrated and as such, you need to stay away from caffeine, alcohol and other substance that dehydrates you. The vocal folds must be hydrated at all times to stay healthy and lubricated. So drink plenty of drink as much water everyday to keep them hydrated.
If you are on medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist whether the medicine you are taking is dehydrating. As a general guide, your body should be well hydrated when your urine is clear and not cloudy.
Everyone’s voice has its own limitations. So get to know yours. Shouting, talking loudly or even singing forcefully is damaging to your vocal cords, this is sheer common sense, but many singers still abuse their voices this way. So don’t shout.
Unfortunately, some people think that to sing powerfully, they have to shout. No, they don’t have to. You can develop a powerful voice with the correct vocal exercises without having to shout.
Your vocal cords collide with each other more than a million times everyday when you produce a sound and so, any extra harsh activities like shouting puts further strain on the already overused vocal cords.
When recovering from a coarse voice like say, from a sore throat, avoid any unnecessary conversations or phone calls to let your voice fully recover. Otherwise your recovery will be slower and even then, small permanent damages may occur.
You need to know that your vocal cords are muscles and therefore like any muscles, they need a thorough warm up before it can perform at its peak when you are singing. By the same token, they need to be cooled down with vocal exercises after your performances.
Just because you get away without warming up or cooling down now does not guarantee that you will not damage your voice in the future.
Next on the list is to avoid late night eating because this may end up with your stomach acid spilling into your larynx when you lie down to sleep and causing a hoarse voice and over the long term, permanent voice damage.
These are just some of the many things that you should not do to preserve, protect and maintain your voice producing mechanism so that you can have a good singing voice permanently.

A good singing technique is the best vocal hygiene, but in addition the singer should know how to maintain good vocal condition, which is at least partly dependent on good general physical condition.
When we say that a singer has a good technique, the implication is that he knows how to sing correctly. Actually, a good singing technique involves several techniques: singing in the normal or “bell” quality; singing agilely; singing loudly and softly; singing in the low, middle, and high registers; breathing deeply; supporting the speaking voice as well as the singing voice; and controlling the breath.
In addition to developing a good singing technique, a singer needs to condition his vocal mechanism and keep it flexible. There is no substitute for intelligent vocalization to accomplish these ends.
The teacher should not allow a student to lose sight of his primary objective, which is to establish a good legato of normal or “bell” resonance quality. Lyric legato singing with emphasis on the vowel sounds is the building process, whereas dramatic, nonlegato singing, with emphasis on the consonants or emotional stops is the destructive one.
Good vocal condition is dependent on good physical condition. A singer should live a moderate, well-ordered life, avoiding excesses in eating, drinking, and smoking. Physical exercises in moderation, such as golf, tennis, swimming, and horseback riding should be helpful in maintaining good physical condition. Heavy exercising, such as weight lifting, ballet and acrobatic dancing, distance running, in fact, any exercises that call for heavy breathing or sudden closures of the vocal cords, are not conducive to good vocal condition.
Keeping the voice in good condition
A teacher of singing should teach each of his students how to know his own voice and how to keep it in good condition. This involves the student knowing his normal or “bell” quality; what and how much to vocalize; the song literature he should sing to fit his stage of development; how to solve his range problems, and a basic rule for diction to establish a good legato; what physical exercises to use, and what foods to avoid.
Students should be cautioned against yelling at any time.
In case of hoarseness or loss of voice, the best suggestion is to rest the voice. Do not use the voice at all.
Students should be warned against singing in drafts, and against over-fatigue from singing or practicing too long at one time.
Using eucalyptus oil or tincture of benzoin in boiling water, inhaling the steam through the mouth, should hasten recovery from hoarseness. Every singer should have for his own use an atomizer with an adjustable tip for intertracheal treatments. For this purpose, or for spraying the nose or throat, a preparation called chloretone inhalant is recommended.
For the intertracheal treatment, which is a matter of spraying the vocal cords, the nozzle of the atomizer is inserted to the back wall of the throat with the adjustable tip turned down. The bulb of the atomizer is then squeezed, with the vocal cords in approximation by saying or singing ay or ah. A gagging reflex takes place immediately when the oil spray touches the approximated cords. Enough medication is left, however, for curative purposes. Prolonged colds or vocal difficulties should be treated by a specialist.
A conclusion based on teaching singing in private lessons and in class lessons is that the playing of wind instruments is not conducive to good vocal production. This is particularly true of instrumental playing where a highly developed embouchure (lip tonus) is desirable. In addition, many teachers of wind instruments teach low abdominal breathing with no expansion of the rib-cage, and a relaxed throat condition. Neither of these fits in with intercostal high abdominal breathing or pharyngeal control.
It may also be said that singing is not conducive to a good instrumental playing condition. Therefore, an individual with an unusually promising voice who has also a decided aptitude for playing a wind instrument should make an early decision as to which field is the more important to him.
Now you know how to care for the voice and maintain it in peak condition.

VOCAL TIPS FOR STORYTELLING
By Diane Brandon
Your voice, along with your face and your body, is a major tool that you rely upon in storytelling. If your voice is not in optimum condition, then your storytelling performance may suffer accordingly.
Here, then, are some tips for maintaining that intrinsic element of your work.
Your voice is part of your body. Keeping your body healthy will help to keep your voice healthy. Sleep can be critical to the condition of your voice: if you get too little sleep, you may find that your voice is husky or hoarse or has more phlegm than normal, or that your throat is scratchy.
Drinking milk before a performance may “coat” your throat and produce phlegm. Some people are sensitive to any milk products, including cheese and yogurt, and you may need to avoid them prior to a performance.
Drinking alcohol can impair your vocal performance, as it relaxes the vocal folds and makes it harder for them to approximate.
When performing in cold weather, the throat should be kept warm. If the throat is unusually cold and the voice is used, hoarseness or vocal strain could result.
Before a performance, vocal warm-ups are a good thing to do. Just as a dancer or athlete needs to warm up his or her muscles, so too does a performer need to warm up the voice, as the vocal folds are
muscles. In warming up, you should start out lightly and gradually work up to more intensity or volume. The specific exercises you do don’t matter as much as easing into and gradually working up to intensity, volume, or higher or lower ends of your range.
Deep breathing can not only help to relax you before a performance, but can also help to support the voice.
Any tension in the face, jaw, or neck should be eased. Tightness in these areas can produce a “tight” voice and lead to strain. Doing the beginning of a yawn in conjunction with deep breathing can help reduce tension and open up these areas.
You don’t want to “push” your voice too much, by overdoing the volume or yelling. This type of misuse can lead to strain and hoarseness and, if done over time, can produce nodes on the vocal folds. Any ongoing, chronic hoarseness may be indicative of this condition.
Your throat and voice give you wonderful, built-in feedback whenever you’re doing something wrong: if your throat gets tight or sore after using your voice or your voice gets hoarse from use, you’re getting feedback that you’ve done something injurious.
As a storyteller, you may be concerned about strengthening your
voice. Your voice, however, will naturally strengthen over time and with practice. The key is to use it healthily and not to “push” it too much or strain it. As your voice strengthens (through the vocal folds developing), you’ll gradually be able to do more with it and use it in ways you couldn’t before.
